Sibling RivalryToward the end of 1189, the King and Queen of Wessex & Mercia greeted a welcome surprise: Edith, nearly forty years of age, was expecting another child! When Prince Geoffrey married his bride, Princess Aline (of Mercian nobility), it was in time to be able to kiss the head of his youngest brother, David, resting in their mother's arms. The wedding was a lavish affair, a celebration of Wessex & Mercia's prosperity during the reign of King Philip I, who marveled at how his family was growing - especially considering that he was an only child.Another two years went by, and Geoff and Aline welcomed sons - identical twins, fewer than five minutes apart. As the midwife showed Prince Crispin to his beaming mother and went about cleaning him off, Prince Faramond followed so quickly that he admittedly wasn't properly attended. Faramond's neck seemed to have suffered some sort of impact during the birth process, and it looked stretched on one side. Aline - ever shy and unsure of her place in the world - held both her sons close to her and prayed for their good health. For his part, Geoff is a doting father of his infants. The family he had once begrudgingly accepted as his destiny now meant more to him than anything else in the world. Anyone who violated their safety would be met with the wrath of heaven.During this time, Prince Charles of France realized he really needed a wife. He'd waited even longer than Philip had to marry Edith! A daughter of the House of Wessex was the most ideal choice for the stability and prosperity of France, so he entered into negotiations with the King and Queen, who then alerted King Reginald and Queen Catherine of Northumbria that Charles of France would be coming to visit Princess Eleanor. The Northumbrians welcomed such an august visitor, and at first the lovely Nell was just that: lovely. Everything his family would hope for. Yet when he met the fiery and intelligent Maud, who could wield a bow better than his finest archers... well, Charles had eyes for no one else. Maud was initially resistant to his attentions and persuasions, believing him addle-brained (though not un-handsome), and Nell was livid at being passed over for her younger sister for the eventual title of Queen of France - what she had essentially trained for since birth. Yet in the summer of 1193, in a wood near Durham, something happened that brought the Crown Prince of France and Princess Maud to the King & Queen of Northumbria to "explain the need for a wedding posthaste," as Catherine wrote to her sister-in-law. Beyond shocked, Edith and Philip immediately set about preparations to embark for Paris, for their daughter to become the Princess of France and live in the Palais de la Cité. Nell, who declined to attend the wedding in perhaps the first breach of etiquette in her life, expressed hatred for her sister - once one of her closest friends - till the end of days, and vowed revenge on her sister for stealing the life meant for her. Maud knew she would never forget how she exited her uncle's great hall to the sound of Nell's shrill condemnations - how she fell into Charles' arms in anguish in the stairwell, knowing Nell had no one.As for the younger Wessexes, Prince Percy is still a young man of letters, with little interest in life at Court. Philip and Edith were certain he would flourish in the Church, and wrote to the abbot of Durham Priory to see about sending him there. Princess Maria has stopped playing pranks and wandering off into the woods where servants struggle to find her - but she also simply makes more noise due to playing music most places she goes (she is an accomplished lutanist for her age). She lives in music and poetry, and her parents worry she can be taken advantage of. Little Prince David is, of course, three years old and behaving as a three-year-old normally does.***Please rate my personal name lists:www.behindthename.com/pnl/69381
