Susanna, known affectionately as Zanna by her family, was named the heir to the throne at the age of twelve, once it was certain that her parents would have no more children. In Irnys, the youngest child of the reigning monarch has been the heir for hundreds of years. This began with King Fionn, who deemed his youngest child, his daughter Iris, the most worthy of his children to take the throne. This began a tradition that became law. So from the time it was certain her mother would have no more children, Susanna was groomed for rule. The youngest of seven, Susanna was always surrounded by people who loved her and thought she would have many years to learn and study before she took the throne. But her father, King Walter, was killed by an assasin, a man assumed to be mad as he spent two days shouting and screaming nonsense before his execution. Susanna and her family were devastated, but not so much that her mother, Queen Evelina, lost her head for a moment. Susanna, at once the most important person and the most tempting target in Inrys, was quickly surrounded with bodyguards. Among them was her intended, the former Lord of Evenburgh. Bran, her beloved fiance, has been engaged to her since they were eleven, but it wasn't until the age of sixteen that they fell in love. Since then they have been the subject of poems and songs, extolling the love of the beautiful young princess and her adoring, handsome betrothed. The agreement was that the two would marry when Bran (a few months younger than Susanna) reached eighteen, but this was not to be. Their marriage was hurried to be right after her coronation, and the two are being urged by Susanna's mother as well as the other advisors to produce an heir as soon as possible. The assassination looks like only one man's derangement, but they want to take no chances.
Susanna barely had time to process her father's death before she was crowned and then married. Both were lavish celebrations, but tinged with bitter mounrfulness for Susanna and her family. She had always assumed that her father would walk her down the aisle at her wedding; instead it was her oldest brother Robert. Her coronation she had always assumed would be a sad day for her, as it would come after the death of her father, but she had imagined her wedding as the happiest day of her life. Instead, still reeling, she could barely manage the facade of happiness she knew she had to put on. But she is happy to be married to Bran, and she respects the need to have an heir quickly. Though she thinks herself a bit young to be bearing children, she appreciates that she will not have the luxury of waiting until she is ready.
