A Welsh language modification of Nell, believed to be a medieval diminutive of names beginning with El, such as Eleanor, Ellen or Helen, meaning "bright, shining one". It may also have arisen from the medieval affectionate phrase mine El, which was later reinterpreted as my Nel.
Variant of Nela. Nel Rawlinson is a character from "In Desert and Wilderness", a popular young adult novel by the Polish author and Nobel Prize-winning novelist Henryk Sienkiewicz, written in 1911.
