Meaning & History
Dutch, Afrikaans and West Frisian form of the ancient Germanic name Burghar. This given name is very rare in the Netherlands nowadays and is likely to remain so, since burger is also a regular word in Dutch. It usually means "citizen", but it can also be a short form of the word hamburger meaning "hamburger". Interestingly, in both cases, the word is etymologically related to the name. Also compare Birger.A known bearer of this name is the South African shot putter Burger Lambrechts (b. 1973).
