I've liked it ever since I had a Mara in my class in 2nd grade. She's the only one I've ever met. I thought it was a really pretty name, and she was a sweet girl.
eta: The Mara I knew pronounced it MAHR-a, with a short a. That's the only pronunciation I would expect, I didn't realize it had another option.
