[Opinions] Mara
Do we like Mara? I think she is intriguing, rather dark, and extremely passionate. She also appears to be neglected, both in the naming world, and in real life. I like the meaning of "bitter" as well. To me it is more passionate than negative.
She is slightly intimidating.
She has also suddenly appeared on my short list, at number 4 for a female. I don't know how these things happen. No middle names yet, though if I went with Mara Amelia (or Mara Amira--though this is a little rhymey), it could honor my brother, Mark Amir.
Mara Catharina, maybe.

I like Mara. It's not an intimidating name to me - it's sweet and serious. I say mar-a (first syllable rhymes with car) exclusively. I think I've only met one, a little girl, and in her case it is a nickname for Margaret, which I like - that way the "bitter" meaning is avoided.
I tried to convince my husband of Mara as a nickname for Margaret (which I am always trying to get him to like) but evidently there are Central American gangs called maras and he doesn't like that association.

I do... somewhat.
No, not really. I dislike the meaning and I think it's a little boring. I know three girls named Mara but it's so close to Lara (I know lots) and Sara, Sarah (I know many) as well as Yara, Cara, Kara and other similar names that it seems boring to me. I don't think she's intimidating at all. I like Mara Amira best.
I love Mara. My cousin Anna almost was named Mara. But her father didn't care much for the name. My aunt wanted her to be Mara and my uncle wanted her to be Michelle. I don't know how they got there but they named her Anna Elizabeth. Elizabeth is her mn.
I agree Mara always seems like a fiery name to me of a passionate person. I agree with everything you feel about it. Probably because it reminds me of the Star Wars character Mara Jade who eventually marries Luke Skywalker. Maybe since she is a red head I always think of it suiting someone with dark red hair. Or I see it for someone with black, dark brunette or dark blonde hair.
I like Mara Amelia. Mara Amira is a little too matchy unfortunately. I like Mara Catherina.

I really love Mara pronounced "MAIR-uh" / "MAYR-uh" like Terra, but I'm not sold on this spelling. I usually default to Merah
Mara ("MAR-uh" like car) is nice too but a bit more bland and stale

Like the sound, but the meaning sucks, so I wouldn't use it. Seen too many lives made miserable by bitterness... and bitter people are rather unpleasant to be around. Sometimes bitterness leads to murder, underhanded vengeful deception and even wars... sometimes even from something that started out as a mere mis-understanding. Passion is not what comes to my mind on the meaning of bitter at all.
I like Mara sometimes. She's dark and melancholy, so when I'm in the right mood...
I pronounce the first syllable to rhyme with car, far, hardy-har-har, etc. It's the only pronunciation I've encountered and the only one I like.

I really like Mara; she's on my PNL. I agree with you about the intriguing aspect, and I find her gentle, sweet, and beautiful, though in a non-traditional way.
My stock combo is Mara Josephine. Mara Amira would be very nice, and I like Mara Catharina.

I love MAR-ah, but not MAIR-ah.
Wow I like it now!
I never thought much of the name before but after reading your thoughts - I am intrigued.

I've liked it ever since I had a Mara in my class in 2nd grade. She's the only one I've ever met. I thought it was a really pretty name, and she was a sweet girl.
eta: The Mara I knew pronounced it MAHR-a, with a short a. That's the only pronunciation I would expect, I didn't realize it had another option.

How are you pronouncing it?
Mahr-a or mar-a?
I love Mara, pronounced mar-a. It's simple, unexpected and yes, dark. I'd pair Mara with something simple - Mara Catherine, Mara Eve, Mara Olivia. Mara Amira is cute, though.

When you say mar-a, do you mean so the Mar rhymes with the mar in Mary? (when I see Mahr-a and Mar-a, I pronounce them the same..)
Anyway, I only like MAHR-a. MAYR-a like Mary seems a little counterintuitive for some reason, and not as pleasant-sounding. (Unless it was spelled differently... maybe)

Think Sarah
pronounced with an American accent, then think like Mary. Both are used.

I'm having an internal argument re: this
I think Mara, like Mary with an a at the end. But then, Mahr-a sounds supremely artistic. It's up in the air. Maybe I'd use both, but on different occasions.

I personally prefer MAHR-ah over MARE-ah, but they are both nice.

I like Mara!
I like Mara Amira.
Also Mara Katerina, Mara Opal, Mara Violet, Mara Cordelia, Mara Onyx, Mara Julia, Mara Juno, Mara Olympia, Mara Guinevere, Mara Jocasta, Mara Alina, Mara January, Mara Junia, Mara Annabel, Mara Luisa, Mara Louise. I like Mara Jade too, but that's probably too Star Wars for real life!

I like Mara. I've written a short story about a girl named Mara and the title was "Bitter".
Mara Amelia & Mara Amira are both very good combos. I don't really like Catharina but it sounds nice next to Mara.

I have a cousin named Mara. Mara Anne, I think. She's pretty, blonde, smart, really comfortable with people. She's only in the 5th grade or thereabouts, but she's given me a good impression of the name. It's hard for me to hear Mara and not think of her. I'm a bit envious of her first name, actually. If she hadn't been named Mara it may have been on my list when I was choosing what to change my name to.
I pretty much agree with your assessment of the name. I think Mara Catharina is a gorgeous combo and fully approve.

Yes, yes. We love Mara. At least I do. "Intriguing, dark, extremely passionate and slightly intimidating" are perfect adjectives for Mara. I would add "mysterious."
Mara Vivien and Evelyn Mara are stock combos for me. Let's see what else tumbles forth:
Mara Edelmira (still rhymey, but less so)
Mara Celeste
Mara Siobhan
Mara Gabrielle
Mara Judith
Mara Pascale
Mara Lilith
Mara Jessamine
Mara Mirabel (= miracle / wonder in Latin)
Mara Simone
Mara Brigid
Mara Danielle
Mara Lior
So many different directions she leads you in. That's part of her allure. :-)
ETA: Mara Karima (contains "amir" backwards)
