Derived from the Germanic name elements wentil meaning "a Vandal" (see Wendel) and muot meaning "courage, boldness".A notable bearer of this name was Wendelmoet Claesdochter, a Dutch Lutheran who was executed for heresy in 1527. Her memory is still honoured in Dutch protestant circles today.
