Late medieval form of Nicolaas, which ultimately comes from the early medieval name Nycolaes. The name is still in use to this day, albeit very rarely. Famous Dutch bearers of this name include the surgeon and mayor Nicolaes Tulp (1593-1674), the painter Nicolaes Pieterszoon Berchem (1620-1683) and the painter Nicolaes Maes (1634-1693).
