Meaning & History

Nabi means "pot" in Okinawan language and was a common name for a woman in old Okinawa.

A famous bearer is Onna Nabi, a female Ryukyuan poet of the 1700s who improvised a poem when she received King Shokei at Manzakage. She was the first-recognized female poet in Okinawa.
