Meaning & History
Variant of Louwerens, though it can also easily be a variant spelling of Lourens in some instances. In the latter case, the spelling is more phonetic in nature. Presumably, it was created in an attempt to make it explicitly clear that the diphthong -ou- should be pronounced in the Dutch way, rather than in the French way. After all, given the fairly high prevalence of French given names in the Dutch-speaking world, it is quite feasible that some people would make the mistake of pronouncing -ou- in the French way.Known bearers of this name include the Dutch landscape painter Louwrens Hanedoes (1822-1905) and the Dutch writer Louwrens Penning (1854-1927).
