Meaning & History

Medieval Dutch form of Gertrude. It remains in use to this day, but it's extremely rare.

A notable bearer of this name was the blessed Geertruyt van Oosten (± 1320-1358), a Dutch Beguine who had received the Stigmata. As a consequence, she was already venerated (locally) when she was still alive.
