Meaning & History
Variant of Azriel used in the Geneva Bible (1560), Douay-Rheims Bible (1582-1610), the Clementine Vulgate (1592) and the Nova Vulgata ("Neo-Vulgate", 1979). The latter two are respectively the former and current official Bible of the Roman Catholic Church.In the Septuagint (Greek Old Testament) Asriel occurs only in verse 25:18 of 1 Chronicles, where it is a form of Azarel.In literature, the English author Philip Pullman (b. 1946) used the name for a character in his His Dark Materials series, first released in 1995.
