Another two years have passed. The discontent about Princess Adelheid's unpopular marriage has cooled in the wake of another new controversial move. Relations with England have been good for decades thanks to the marriage of King Wolfgang to Elizabeth, now Dowager Queen. After a visit to her homeland, the dowager returned with three English ladies, announcing her intention to introduce them to the court. That was all well and good; the three young girls were pretty and well-mannered, and within a few months the Dowager had found husbands for all of them. That was when the problem came up. One of the girls, Lady Mary James, refused to marry the young man she had been promised to. She was eighteen, and the man waas only twenty and one she had shown favor to. Then it came to light that she had not only been carrying on a liason with one of the fifteen-year-old stable boys, but that she was pregnant by him! The girl was sent back to England and the boy was dismissed, but the bad conduct of Lady Mary shocked the entire court.
