Shortly after Josef's birth, Diederich was tasked to accompany the Dowager Queen Elizabeth to her native England. Although he was understandably loath to leave behind his wife and newborn son, Diederich obeyed his orders and summoned his finest troops for the protective detail.
Elizabeth stayed longer than expected -- over a year. When she finally decided to return to Bial, she brought with her three young English ladies, intending to introduce them at the Bialan court. Diederich silently approved of two of the women, but the third unnerved him for some reason. From the moment they met, he thought her to be deceptive and calculating, though she wore the mask of propriety with skill.
Upon the contingent's return to Bial, Diederich rushed straight back home. He had missed his wife and son terribly, especially since Josef had grown so much in his absence. He and Johanna did not hesitate to make up for lost time, and nine months later, a second son, Mattias, was born. But his birth was overshadowed by the simultaneous arrival of another boy for the king and queen, as well as the shocking scandal that Lady Mary James -- the same woman who had put Diederich on edge -- had shunned her well-to-do engagement and was pregnant by a fifteen-year-old stable boy.
The kingdom was shocked and disappointed -- but none more so than Diederich, who was once again obliged to leave his wife and newborn baby to escort Lady James back to England. Thankfully, this errand took a mere two weeks, and Diederich was soon back home with Johanna and their boys, hoping that Bial could evade scandal long enough for him to spend some true quality time with his family.
