Smelly is a pretty lighthearted word and I’ve personally been called worse things. I’ve known smelly and stinky be used affectionately. Pretty sure I’ve even called my so stinky. Smellies can also mean toiletries and perfumes here.
And besides, smelly here was suggested a potential alliterative nickname, not an actual descriptor. Being called smelly because it’s similar-ish to your name is different to being called it because you actually smell bad.
