Ages?
I was just wondering how old a lot of you are. Because for the short time I've
been coming on this site and being active in the polls & message boards, I've noticed my
style of names (modern names) are not liked, and so many old school 'classic' names are the favorites.
I'm wondering if this has to do with age?
Also what are your top names?

I'm 46. I love so many types of names that it's hard to list my top names. But they are all mostly classic. Sampling: Niamh, Aoife, Ursula, Iphigenia, Rosamund, Peter, Desmond, Malachy, Cornelius, Rex.
I'm not here to name future children. I'm here to have fun with names so I tend to draw outside of the lines a lot.

I'm 27. I think you might be right in thinking there is a correlation between more mature people liking more old-fashioned names. Not that liking "modern" names is "immature", but that just seems to be a natural pattern I notice as well. Older parents seem to favour more traditional names. I now love the names I used to hate when I was a teenager.
However it seems to start going the other way as well the older you get ...I notice a lot of "grandparent-age" people really dislike old fashioned names and find them ugly. I guess because there is not a lot of charm in those names for them since they grew up with them! I'm sure I'll wrinkle my nose at my kids thinking Justin and Kimberly are "refreshing" ;)
um whoops my favourite names are things like
Pearl
Lavinia
Seraphine
Fern
Ferdinand
Casper
Hugo
Rex
pretty old fashioned I guess

I'm eighteen. I'm fond of a lot of classic names (Elizabeth, Beatrice, Margery, Lydia etc.), but I wouldn't exactly call them my 'favourite', though; there are a lot of classic names I don't like, actually!
I don't have a list of 'top names' that can be measured (there are too many and my top favourite shifts often), but I'm generally drawn toward:
- Germanic/Norse names
- Welsh/Irish names
- Unusual, pretty names that aren't too weird-sounding (i.e. Reiko, Rayen, Ayelet)

I'm 16. I've loved names for a really long time and everyone thinks i'm crazy when i get name books from the library.
Thanks everyone for your responses! I guess it does have to do with age, but much less than I thought as so many of you are around my age (late teens early 20's)

I don't think your choices of modern names are bad at all! When I think of bad modern names, I think of Nevaeh, -isha names, and names with overly "creative" spellings.
I like:
- Elliot (prefer on boy)
- Aria (though I prefer Arya)
- Amara
- Carys
- Reid (prefer Reed spelling)
- Lachlan
- River (prefer on girl)

My favorites tend to be more classic, a lot of Biblical, but I do like some more modern names as well (like Addison & Avery for girls, Aidan, Logan, Carter for boys) and a few more out there names (Colette, Ophelia, Maeve, Grey).

I am 30.
I think my taste in names has varied over the years. I am more appreciative of older names now then I use to be. I find certain older names to be unique because they are no longer used often. Trendy, modern, popular sometimes feel worn and used out to me. There are just too many of them. I can see that in 10/15 years times how dated they will be, because of the trendy names I grew up with.
Names that I have liked (and still like) when I was younger in the 90's feel a little dated now. They were pretty unique sounding when I liked them though. I don't think I would ever consider using some of them, but here are my favorites from back then:
Girls: Sophie, Aurora, Arianna, Samantha, Victoria, Sabrina, Belle, Eva
Boys: Austin, Mark, Ivan, Lucas, Zach, Ash, Bryce, Jackson
I still like the names (especially Sabrina), I just have expanded my taste. Today I like some modern names, some older names etc... It is more varied.
Names I like now that I would never liked in the 90's: Sybil, Simon, Clarice, Thomas, Esther, Lenny, Tate, Evangeline, Eliza, Ellis, Syrus, Edmund, Seamus... there are more but you get the idea. These are not necessarily top on my list, they are just names I like, that I don't think I would have liked when I was a teenager.

I'm 16. I think age has to do with name tastes to some level, but age also dictates lots of things to some point. My top ten for each gender are (in no particular order):
Aria
Ruby
Lyra
Verity
Persephone
Violet
Annabel
Genevieve
Catherine
Odette or Gisele
Astor
Raymond
Shia
William
Nathaniel
Michael
Malachi
Jacob
Aaron

I'm 17. I like names like Rowan (girl), Anna, Rohan, Roran, Ronan, Gabriel, Taliesin, Tristan, Morgan (girl or boy), Lyra, Rhiannon, Willow, Sage (girl), River (girl), Anthony, Andreas, Pascale, Artemis, Brennan, and Aerona.
I'm not sure what it has to do with, but I don't think it's age.
I've never really liked a lot of "modern" names.
From your list, I do think these are really nice, and a few have been on my list at times:
Brooke, Carys, Chiara, Eden, Gwendolyn, Jasmine, Jewel, Raven, Summer
Callum, Christian, Clark, Gabriel, Leland, Mitchell
I'm 39 and my taste used to be more similar to other posters here than it is now. After I started looking up names online and getting on message boards, or maybe it was getting pregnant that did it - my taste changed a little. It got easier to see that names that intrigued me, were not necessarily the names I'd be comfortable using for my own kids. After I had children my taste changed a little again. Today my top names are probably
Amy, Edith, Meryl, Julia, Lark, Claudia, Audra, Heather
Merrick, Damon, Marcus, Valentine "Val," Adrian, Conrad, Drake

It might have to with age. I do like mostly traditional names, but a few modern ones as well.
I'm 19.
I'm 19.
I think in part it is a reaction against popularity, also what Llewella said...in a community about the etymology and history of names a name like Kaylee with a short history and unclear etymology is seen as having less significance. They also tend to sound dated more than classic names. Maybe in another 50 years people will start to appreciate them!
I'm 17. But my taste has not changed very much, maybe just got a little more diverse when I discover new names. I still love my favourites from years ago, Safiya and Valentina.
My top names right now are Sophia, Clara/Chiara, Mariam, Anahid, Rosamund
Theodor, Anton, Ernest, Valentin, Aurelian.

Older than all you kids (Get off my lawn!)
I don't ever rank my names (I have this problem with ranking/choosing favorites), but if you want to look, they're in my PNL (link below) and in the main body of my profile (the ones that aren't in the database).
EDIT: Sorry yasmine! I didn't mean this as a reply to your post.

I am 22 and I prefer more classic, timeless names (Henry, Theodore, Beatrice, Catherine, etc).
I have liked names my whole life but have really been interested in last 7 or 8 years. I went through a short time of liking trendy names but for at least the last 5 years, so since I was 16/17, I have preferred classic names.
I honestly think name taste has more to do with education, location, and knowledge of names than age.

17. But I think it has more to do with personality. Someone concerned with how cute a baby is will go for something like Rylie or Jaeden. Someone who is more serious will go for a name with more history and substance.
Anyway, my favorite names are:
Charlotte
Eloise
Beatrice
Alice
Catherine
John "Jack"
Henry

I don't think liking old-school, classic names has to do with age, it's just a difference of taste. On this site, you won't find many fans of the more modern, trendy names, but that doesn't mean they are terrible, or that no one likes them at all. The thing is, we like discussing names that don't get a lot of love in real life.

I'm 25. The reason most people here don't like modern names is because we're interested in the origin and history of names, and modern names often have none or hardly any of that. Also I think we often tend to look for more uncommon names that interest us.

I'm 23, and my favorite names are here: http://www.behindthename.com/pnl/52996/85726
I'm 32. It's true that a lot of people on BtN prefer old-fashioned names, particularly those which are currently quite rare.
My favourites are: Davina, India, Louisa, Fern, Frances and Sienna for girls; Benjamin, Tom, Finn, Jacob and Matthew for boys.

Very impressive names for a 15 year old. At your age I barely knew what I liked. Kudos.
I am 20. I really enjoy older more classic female names, but Biblical/Jewish male names.
I'm 29. I've been coming here for about 5 or 6 years. I still like the same kinds of names that I liked when I had my first child 10 years ago.
Quick question. Is your son, Dante, named after the person who's quote you have on you signature, Dante Alighieri, or is that a happy coincidence?
I loved the name Dante anyway, but thought it couldn't hurt to share a name with one of the greatest poets in history.
I'll be 19 in a few months, and below is a link to my PNL which has most of my favorites. I think it's a pretty accurate description of my naming style.
I turned twenty last month.

Names are such a personal thing. If you just started really getting into names, it's quite likely your tastes will change greatly by the time you have a child, I know mine have changed in the last six years since I have been coming to BtN.
Just don't let it bother you, I like names that I have never seen people put on their list.

Oh gosh no I've been into names since I was about 11 and I'm almost 21 this year.
And yes my names have changed greatly! I think my taste/style will stay the same
now, and we're planning on having kids in about 3-4 years (which is a long time for
even more names to catch my eye)

I've been wondering that lately too. Geography probably plays a big part as well. Anyway, I am 21-years-old and was born and raised in New England. My top 5 for each:
Fionnuala
Lily
Adelaide
Indira
Veronique
Charles
Norman
Abram
Desmond
Roscoe
I tend to stay more old school with the boy names than the girl names, but I do try to stay away from the standard old school classics.

I'm 20! Haha, I think you already know that. I decided to join this site too! I really have way too much free time. I think you already know that too..
Lol! Oh Amsy. You'll fit right on in here cause most people have your style of names!
