Year 1
Elaine had always wondered who her birth mother was, so she and Nathan traveled to the orphanage in Shanghai from which Nik and Adele adopted her. She found out that her mother's name was Ni Jianping. Jianping was a teenager when she became pregnant with Elaine and gave her up for adoption. Unfortunately, the orphanage did not have Jianping's current address, but Elaine finally knows her mother's name.
Year 2
Nathan and Elaine got a pet lizard, which they named Sully.
Year 3
Elaine began working on a book about her experience growing up in a family with both biological and adopted children. She also included her search for her birth mother in her book, which she hopes to publish soon.
Year 4
Elaine and Nathan were very happy to be expecting their first child, and surprised when they found out that they were having twins! Philip Thomas has curly black hair and brown eyes, and Leo Edward has wavy black hair and blue eyes.
Year 5
Nathan took a week-long trip to London to attend a medical conference for infectious disease doctors.
Year 6
Elaine and Nathan adopted a one-year-old girl from India. Devi Kavita's parents died in an earthquake, and her relatives were too poor to raise her. Elaine has always been grateful to Nik and Adele for choosing her, and she was happy to choose her own child who needed her and Nathan. Philip and Leo were excited to have a little sister!
Year 7
The Trasks adopted another child, this time from Russia. Alisa Dominika was ten years old when Elaine and Nathan adopted her. Alisa's single mother was too ill to care for her, so she sent Alisa to live with her uncle. The uncle was abusive, so Alisa began to act out and then ran away. Alisa's mother surrendered custody, so she was put up for adoption. Elaine and Nathan hope that a stable family will help Alisa.
Year 8
Elaine and Nathan completed their third adoption process. They welcomed twin three-month-old girls into their family. The twins were not formally named because they were abandoned at a state orphanage. Elaine and Nathan named the girls Josie Ellen and Cora Lillian.
Year 9
The Trasks' area saw heavy flooding during the spring. Luckily, only part of the basement of their home was damaged. Nathan helped to sandbag areas near rivers and streams in the relief effort.
Year 10
The Trasks went to Ireland to visit Elaine's brother Matthias and his family. They had a great visit, and all of the cousins loved hanging out together.
Year 11
Elaine finally published her book! She wrote about her range of experiences with adoption, from being an adopted child to finding her birth mother to adopting four of her own children. The book was well-received by other families influenced by adoption.
Year 12
Nathan and Elaine weren't really planning on having any more children, so Elaine was surprised to become pregnant! Nina Ysabel has curly black hair and blue eyes.
Year 13
The Trasks adopted a cat that wandered into their neighborhood. Alisa and Devi named it Hermione, after their favorite book character.
Year 14
Alisa heard that her birth mother's illness had worsened, and Elaine offered to take Alisa to Russia to visit her. Alisa was glad to be reunited for a brief time with her birth mother, and Elaine also enjoyed her visit, even though she doesn't speak Russian.
Year 15
Elaine finally heard about her birth mother's whereabouts, but for a sad reason: Ni Jianping had passed away in a car accident in Beijing. Elaine traveled to China again and visited Jianping's grave. She also tracked down Jianping's husband and her half-brother. She still keeps in touch with them.
