The Spurlings live in Austin, TX, USA.
Year 1: Lucy receives a large inheritance from her great-uncle, who was in the oil business. They decide to save most of it, but Desmond is able to buy a new car.

Year 2: Desmond and Lucy buy a saltwater aquarium full of colorful fish! Many hours are wasted just watching them.

Year 3: Desmond and Lucy welcome a daughter, Ivy Linh Spurling! She was born in Austin and weight 6 lb. 5 oz. She has wavy, dark brown hair and hazel eyes.

Year 4: Not 4 months after Ivy was born, Lucy discovered she was unexpectedly pregnant again! While it was not planned, they are happy to welcome a sibling for Ivy. Just after Ivy's 1st birthday, they welcomed another daughter, Alice Mai Spurling. She weighed 7 lb even, and has black, wavy hair and the same hazel eyes as her sister.

Year 5: With 2 young children in the house, Desmond and Lucy needed a little break! Lucy's parents came and stayed with the children while D and L took a 2 week vacation to Italy to relax and enjoy beautiful scenery and great food.

Year 6: The Spurlings adopt a kitten from a local shelter. She is a tabby named Lily.

Year 7: Desmond had always wanted to adopt a child from the country of his birth, Vietnam. He was adopted at age 11, and he wants a similar child for their family. Desmond and Lucy adopt 10 year old Graham Đức Chí Spurling. He has black, straight hair and brown eyes. Coming from a rough background of poverty and abuse, he has difficulty adjusting and a lot of behavioral problems, but he is doing better in counseling and behavioral therapy. Desmond speaks to him in both Vietnamese and English.

Year 8: The Spurling family moves to Houston where Lucy has a new job for a new station. Desmond joins the Houston Symphony Orchestra. The children seem to be adjusting well, even Graham, who proves to be a very good soccer player.

Year 9: The family begins to volunteer with an adoption agency that specializes in international adoptions. Desmond and Lucy help other families through international adoptions and Demond speaks about his experience, both being an international adoptee and having a son of his own that he has adopted.

Year 10: Demond and Lucy decide to have one more child. They welcome a little boy, Theodore Lành "Theo" Spurling, in Houston, weighing 6 lb. 12 oz. and having black, curly hair and brown eyes.
The Spurlings are well-settled in Houston. They take a family trip every other year to visit family in Australia. Graham is very excited to have a young brother. He still has occasional outbursts, and has been diagnosed with PTSD, but he is doing well in counseling and making good grades in school. In addition to playing soccer, he is learning to play guitar. The girls both enjoy dancing and are taking ballet lessons. Ivy has also started playing piano.
