Meaning & History

Dutch variant of Marcellus as well as the Lithuanian short form of Marcelinas.

The Dutch variant originates from the medieval period. It likely came about by priests using Marcel rather than Marcellus in the church books of their parish, which were always written in Latin back then. They latinized it in the same way they did with Biblical names that end in -el (such as Gabriel and Michael): by using the genitive of the third declension of the name in Latin. See Gabrielis and Michaelis for more information.
