Meaning & History
From Latin Gabrielis, which is the genitive of the third declension of Gabriel, the biblical Latin (and also Greek) form of the Hebrew name Gavri'el.In the Netherlands, this has been used as a Latin form of Gabriel (thus basically making it a latinization of a latinization) since at least late medieval times. With that said, the name Gabrielis is also in use in Lithuania, where it is simply the Lithuanian form of Gabriel. As far as I know, the circumstances of the name are different in Lithuania than in the Netherlands, meaning that it does not derive from the Latin genitive like it does in the Netherlands.
