Meaning & History
Means "reed bed" in Galician, derived from the title of the Virgin Mary Nosa Señora da Xunqueira meaning "Our Lady of the Reed Bed". She is the patron saint of the municipality of Cee in Galicia, Spain. According to folk legend, a wooden image of the Virgin appeared in a reed bed at an estuary after being thrown into the sea by a ship. The locals named it Virxe da Xunqueira ("Virgin of the Reed Bed") or A Aparecida ("the Appeared") and on that site they built a hermitage, which in time would become a church dedicated to Virgin Mary.
