Meaning & History
Frisian form of Wibern, an ancient Germanic given name which was often encountered as a variant form of Wigbern and Witubern. However, it can also be a name in its own right, in which case its first element is derived from either Old High German wîh meaning "holy, sacred" or from Old High German wîp meaning "woman". As with the aforementioned names, the second element of the name is derived from Proto-Germanic beran or bernu meaning "bear" (bero and bern in Old High German). With that said, it should be noted that in Frisia, the name Wibren has also been used as a variant form of Wibrân.
