Derived from Japanese 馬 (uma) "horse", 太 (ta) "thick, big, great", and 郎 (ro) "son". A notable fictional bearer of the name is Dr. Umataro Tenma, a character in the manga Astro Boy and its subsequent anime adaptations. He is a scientist who builds Astro Boy in the likeness of his late son, but eventually rejects and disowns the robot when he noticed that he fails to grow.
