Meaning & History

The posthumous daughter of King Briant of the Red Island and Mariole.

Her mother owned a magic golden circlet and, when it was stolen, Mariole fell into poverty and despair. She cast Tristouse into the sea. Tristouse washed up in the kingdom of King Ydor, whom she married when she came of age. Tristouse and Ydor had a son named Torec, and at his birth she laughed for the first time.

Torec eventually reclaimed the stolen circlet. Tristouse died shortly after Torec’s marriage to the Miraude.
