Meaning & History

When written as ტატე, this name is a short form of Estate. It is now also used as an independent name.

When written as თათე, Tate is a short form of Tadeoz. A known bearer is the Assyrian monastic missionary and saint Tadeoz Stepantsmindeli (6th century AD), who was also known as Tate Mamebeli in Georgian. He was one of the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers and was originally from Antioch on the Orontes. Eventually he travelled to Caucasian Iberia, where he spent the remainder of his life. He founded the Stepantsminda Monastery near what is now the town of Kaspi in the Georgian region of Shida Kartli.
