Meaning & History

Adaptation of Sean or its variants, also in use among the Japanese in recent decades.
In kanji, it is most commonly written with a shō kanji, like 翔 meaning "flight," 匠 meaning "workman, artisan," 祥 meaning "good luck, good fortune," 昌 meaning "prosperous" or 尚 meaning "esteem," combined with an on kanji, like 音 meaning "sound," 恩 meaning "favour, obligation" or 苑 meaning "garden, park."
Kanji that do not necessarily correspond to those readings but close enough for the overall reading to be mixed are used as well, such as 慈 (ji) meaning "mercy, affection," 叙 (sho) meaning "confer, narrate" or 汐 (shio) meaning "tide, current" for the first kanji, and 央 ō meaning "middle, centre."
