Meaning & History
Seattle is an anglicization of the modern Duwamish conventional spelling Si'ahl, equivalent to the modern Lushootseed (Chief Seattle's native language) publishing spelling Si'aɫ. A noted bearer is Chief Seattle (c.1780 - 1866) of the Duwamish. A widely publicized speech arguing in favor of ecological responsibility and respect of native Americans' land rights has been attributed to him, and the largest city in Washington state, Seattle, was named after him.
