Modern form of Middle Persian Sāsān of uncertain meaning, possibly from Old Iranian *Sāsāna meaning "defeating enemy" or from the name of a regional Zoroastrian deity. This was the name of a 2nd-century prince, warrior and Zoroastrian priest who founded the Sasanian (or Sassanid) dynasty.
