Meaning & History
From Latin Samuelis, which is the genitive of the third declension of Samuel, the biblical Latin form of the Hebrew name Shemu'el.In the Netherlands, this has been used as a Latin form of Samuel (thus basically making it a latinization of a latinization) since at least late medieval times. With that said, the name Samuelis is also in use in Lithuania, where it is simply the Lithuanian form of Samuel. As far as I know, the circumstances of the name are different in Lithuania than in the Netherlands, meaning that it does not derive from the Latin genitive like it does in the Netherlands.
