From Ryō (also 龍/竜 meaning "dragon") combined with a ma kanji, such as 真 meaning "truth," 馬 meaning "horse," 磨 meaning "polish, shine" 雅 meaning "elegance, grace."One bearer of this name was Ryōma Sakamoto (坂本 龍馬) (1836-1867), a prominent Bakumatsu period (around 1853-1867) figure in the movement to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate.
