From the Old Germanic name Reginwis, itself from the roots regin "advice, counsel, decision" and wīs "wise". Its spelling was influenced by the Dutch word for the river Rhine (Rhijn in the old spelling). A famous bearer was Dutch poet Rhijnvis Feith (1753-1824).
