Meaning & History
Medieval Dutch form of Reinhard. This is one of the names by which Reynard the Fox is known in medieval Dutch literature. The most influential Dutch version of the story is Van den vos Reynaerde (13th century) written by Willem die Madoc(ke) maecte. Although the central character is named Reynaerde in the title, he is not consistently referred to by that name in the original text: the forms Reynaerd and Reynaert are also used by the author.
