From the Chinese character 渠 (qu) meaning “canal” and (liang) meaning “bridge; roof beam”.This was the personal name of Duke Xiao of Qin (秦孝公), a ruler of the state of Qin during the Chinese Warring States Period (475 - 221 BCE). During his reign the Legalist reforms of Shang Yang (商鞅) were instituted, which transformed Qin into a highly efficient military state and laid the groundwork for the Qin unification of China six generations later.
