Popiel is a legendary ruler of the 9th century who is said to have ruled over the Polans or Goplanes. However, there is no historical evidence of his existence to date.At the beginning of the 12th century, an anonymous author, Gallus Anonymus, wrote numerous legends about the events of Popiel's reign. He is said to have been the last representative of the Popielid dynasty, which preceded the Piast dynasty.
