When borne by a female person, this name is a good example of how one can turn a very masculine name (Piet) into a feminine name by simply adding the diminutive suffix -je to the original name. But when borne by a male person, this name is simply a pet form because of the diminutive suffix. Also compare Peetje.

In Dutch children's literature, this is the name of the eponymous (male) character of the book series Pietje Bell written by the Dutch author Chris van Abkoude (1880-1960). Three films based on the books have since been released; in respectively 1964, 2002 and 2003.
