This is my name! :D When I was a kid, I really hated it. People would call me puh-ho-bee or puh-hee-bee or fee-oh-bee. They’d spell it like Pheobe or Feebee. It always felt clunky in my mouth and it embarrassed me— especially with the Friends, The Magic Schoolbus, and Hey Arnold comparisons. I used to spend hours on this website trying to give myself a new name, and in high school I started even using different names. I love it now though! I think it’s really unique and pretty in its own way! I think it’s great that there are so many different spellings and such a wide array of personalities given to Phoebes in movies + TV. Recently I’ve just totally had a change of heart and I’m very proud to be a Phoebe. : ) The nicknames I’ve had are about the same as the other comments. Pheebers and Fifi, mostly.
Phoebe Wilson Couzins (1842–1913) was one of the first female lawyers in the United States. She was the second woman to serve as a licensed attorney in Missouri. Phoebe played an active part in the Suffrage movement.
Oh my goodness, let me tell you about the name Phoebe! It is absolutely gorgeous and has such a powerful meaning. Did you know that it derives from Greek origins and signifies brightness and radiance? And the cherry on top is that there is a Greek goddess named Phoebe who embodied wisdom and prophecy, making it all the more special. But let me tell you, there's a twist! Whenever someone who struggles with pronouncing the letter 'R' says 'freebie', it sounds like 'Phoebie', which is totally cute!

Phoebe is a super cute name and I kinda wish people used it more. The meaning is lovely and its association with the 90’s show Friends makes it even cooler for me. :)

The pronunciation is just weird to me. It sounds like "Fee-bee" which I just don't like.

Phoebe is a really beautiful, bright, and lovely name.
Phoebe is a very gorgeous name; I love its mystical charm. The fact that it’s the name of a moon of Saturn adds to it. I love its classiness and uniqueness; it has never been overused. I think of Phoebe from “The Magic School Bus” and “Friends”.
An eccentric name, but in no way ugly. It's nerdy, and I think Velma from Scooby-Doo should be called Phoebe. I don't care for the association with Friends and Greek mythology.

Pretty name and meaning. It reminds me of a phoenix.
My first name is Phoebe! My mother first heard of it when she was watching the classic TV show 'Friends'Overall, I really like the name. It goes with a lot of middle and last names and the origin, meaning 'bright, or pure' in Greek is really sweet to me. I like this name, although I will say I would have liked to have been given a name with more nicknames, sometimes I get bored of being called just 'Phoebe' all the time. Overall, 8/10!
I like the name Phoebe. Since it means pure you could do a name combo like... Phoebe Dorothea= pure gift of god Phoebe Amanda= pure love Phoebe Letita= pure joy.

Phoebe is a gorgeous and underrated name. An ancestor of mine had this name but spelled as Pheobe. I think I prefer Phoebe, the original.
This name is adorable. It makes me feel happy every time I hear it; somehow it evokes sweetness and innocence. Yet it has such a powerful history... very impressive. I would love to have this name. Sure the spelling is clearly Greek and therefore a little odd given English phonetics, but any minimally educated person should not have to struggle much to learn how to spell it correctly. My own name is phonetically simple and super popular, and honestly quite dull. I find Phoebe so charming and interesting. Love it!

I love the name Phoebe- it has such a lovely ring to it, and the meaning is great. I also like the connection to Greek mythology.
This is my name and I really like it! But some of the comments are awful here, it's NOT hideous and NOT nerdy. I don't like the way it's used in books, always babyish or crazy or scatterbrained. I love the meaning, please stop saying that it's nerdy and hideous!
Well, my name is Phoebe and I'm a teenager and I do find my name rather dry and boring. I wish I could change it. If I could pick two names to choose between it would be Iris or Winter. I love both the names, it would be hard to pick. But I hate my name.
I love this name, I used to think it was ugly, but now it's really sweet and the astronomy association is brill, it doesn't deserve the hate. But, I do dislike the popularity.
I admit that, although I already knew the name from before, I never really knew how to pronounce it because I am Spanish and I read it as it was written "Poh-e-beh" and I was left with a face of "what kind of name is this?" Sorry, I hope no one is offended, there are some English names that I still have trouble knowing how to pronounce them. But then I found out the correct pronunciation and now I think the name Phoebe is very nice and sounds great. Why do people hate it so much? Honestly, I think it's a mature, intelligent and practical girl's name. Very flattering, ideal for any age. Much better than other more "modern" names...
I have a good friend called Phoebe, whom I believe is named after the Biblical figure. However, I also know of someone who named their dog Phoebe so that's interesting.
Hm, seems like some of the people commenting here are jealous of someone called Phoebe? I love this name it’s a classic name with a lovely meaning and it has an interesting spelling which makes it unique. It’s not in the top 10 here in the UK but still common enough for people to know it. It’s a sunny and beautiful name and I think it suits all ages.
Phoebe is an awful name, really overrated at the moment and just UGLY. A girl named Phoebe ruins people’s lives, trust me, once you know a Phoebe you will be sad for the rest of your life. I agree with the commenter below, it’s just in one word U G L Y.
Phoebe reminds me of a sweet, intelligent little girl. I absolutely LOVE this name!

In Greek mythology, this name is associated with Pheobos (“shining”). It is the name of a titan, who is Apollo and Artemis’s grandmother. It is also the name of an amazon who fought Heracles and the name of a spartan princess.
This is my name, and I love it! Some people can’t spell it or call me something which they know annoys me, and some of my friends call me Pebbles (because, and I quote, Phoebe, Phebe, Pebe, Pebbles) or Fifi.
Phoebe is a gorgeous name to me. I imagine a young woman with a fun personality and a beautiful laugh. However, what I don't like is the Friends reference. I used to love Friends and now I wonder how I even watched so much of the show. If I ever have a daughter I want to name her Phoebe James and call her PJ for short. I think that sounds so sweet together.
Personally, I think this is the best hecking name to ever grace this universe. If I knew a Phoebe I would cast her in gold. Even if her personality was trash I would worship her like a god. I cannot express how amazing phoebes are! If you are Phoebe thank you for being born. I love you more than anything I have ever seen. PLEASE name your child Phoebe. They are guaranteed to be automatically amazing, beautiful, smart and will easily get into Harvard. In summation, if you are a Phoebe you’re legally a god. Thank you for existing.
I really like this name now, and tend to go by it. It's kinda weird, considering my original name is Lucinda (which has... a similar meaning?) but I don't really think it fits, as I'm well... Not too bright. Jokes aside, the moon reference is cool. Overall, it's just out of the ordinary to be interesting, but classic enough to be heard of. The spelling is sometimes a bit weird. I make fun of it by spelling it Phöbe (not for real though, of course.)

Why is it going up on the charts again! I wish it declined because it's a lovely name but too common for me.
It's a LOVELY name. Whoever named all Beings must have truly put a lot of work into the names. Each one is BEAUTIFUL AND POWERFUL. Except Jesus... that's a horrible name... sigh, or john or any of these American names omg, they're all so horrible sounding... sounds like a name that was just made up on a whim just to get them out of the way or they came by accident lol... Angel's names are tight too. Arkangel must be added in front of any High Ranking Angels or Devils lol. Ohh Vermillion Devil to match Arkangel. Sounds rich also. Hmmm Demons... Ethereal Demons, damn that sounds sexy.
Phoebe is a very beautiful name for a beautiful goddess. Whoever named the Greeks Primals, Titans and Gods did a wonderful job of choosing their names. So did the Theravadas lol. Im'ma claim credit as Theravada and take it away from India. I really wish I could just travel the world and see all it has to offer instead of being stuck here like this. I'm in LOVE with the name.
My daughter Phoebe is a friendly, bright and happy girl. She loves "Phoebe and her unicorn" books. Yes, her friends and even teachers misspell her name.
I think this name is beautiful for a human. It sounds no more like a pet name than Mary or Lucy or any other cute little name. The history of the name is so remarkable. There is just something very unique about this name. I can understand why its appeal has lasted through millennia!
I first heard the name Phoebe during the 80s from actress Phoebe Cates. I loved it. It was different without being odd and here in the United States it is not very common. My husband was not a fan of this name but I kept bringing it up when pregnant with my daughter. We finally settled on another name but when my daughter was born he was like I can't believe I am going to say this but she looks like a Phoebe. She as well as most people we meet love it. It is not common in the US so the first time we met another Phoebe she was 6. There has not been another Phoebe in her school or doctors office so everyone knows her by the mention of her first name. People smile when they hear her name. She has a laugh with people spelling it, but she loves it, it actually cracks her up (she gets Feebee, fibi, phebe, pheobe and Phoebe and then Phoebs she gets a bazillion ways too. She has people who first didn't know how to pronounce it and now it is a joke... some still call her pho-eeee-beee and phe-o-bee but usually it's Phoebe, phoee, Phoebs, or Phoeber... she loves them all.
Phoebe is a charming name, unique, exotic, eccentric in a good way. I love how the writing and the pronouncing are different and unusual. Phoebe is a special name with many good associations. A cheerful name and one of my favorites.
In England a famous bearer of this name was Phoebe Hessel nee Smith born 1713-1821 she was born in Stepney in the east end of London to a poor family and at the age of 15 fell in love with a sailor called William Goulding but because he had to go to sea she dressed as a boy and signed up to the Royal Navy to be with her lover. She even fought as a man age 16 and got wounded in the arm at the Battle of Fontenoy in 1726. During her life in the Royal Navy they sailed all around Europe and the Caribbean. Phoebe married William and had 6 or 7 children with him at the navel port in Plymouth England. Sadly William died young and all her children died in infancy. Soon afterwards on their next voyage she revealed her gender to the ship's surgeon's wife in 1745 although this was a serious crime she was not punished. Later moving to Brighton and remarrying a fisherman named Thomas Hessel, she lived in Brighton on the south coast of England by now becoming a fashionable spa resort town. In old age she sold gingerbread and candied fruits outside the Prince Regent's Grand Oriental style pavilion in Brighton and became a local and then a national celebrity. Although still remaining desperately poor, she was given a pension by the later prince in 1808, later King George the fourth and was invited to his coronation in 1820. She died in Brighton at the age of 108 in 1821 her headstone reads Phoebe Hessel born in the reign of Queen Anne in the year of our lord 1713 and died in the reign of King George the fourth 1821. What a strong and remarkable woman she must have been, breaking all the rules all of the time :-)
I have this name. I gotta say, growing up, people thought my name was weird. I love my name. I hate being called Phoebs, I go by Phee (fee). I think it is a unique name, People who think it's a weird name are right. But weird is good.
My name is Phoebe and I've always liked it, especially because of the Greek mythology connotations. And I share a name with a character in one of my favorite plays, Shakespeare's As You Like It. Absolutely no one is able to pronounce it on the first go (I mean, c'mon, haven't you people heard of other Phoebe's?), but that's okay! Big love to all the other Phoebes in this comment section.

My name is spelled the same, but instead of being pronounced fee-bee, it's pronounced fo-bee. Growing up, it was hard, mainly because it was an already uncommon name that's been completely twisted yet again (especially in a classroom full of Britney's, Ashley's, and Nicole's); now that I'm an adult, it's better. Definitely still unique, but interesting enough to not forget. I've never met another Phoebe, though, of either pronunciation.
My name is Phoebe. I am around a lot of people from different cultures (mostly Chinese) and my name has been pronounced fe-fe fai-fe be-be pho-bi And last but not lease pheb-fe for some reason Chinese-Taiwanise people have a hard time pronouncing my name, even though my traditional Chinese name is Phei-bi they have a hard time pronouncing it :p anyways I will always love my name :D.
Phoebe is a wonderful name in the bible (Romans 16:1). She was a worker in the church (deaconess) in Cenchrea and a helper of many people. I love this name because it is a wonderful name with wonderful meaning and pronunciation. And because it is the name of my pretty daughter. It means bright, brilliant, shiny?, radiant, clever and pure.

We named our new baby Phoebe because of its uniqueness and it's such a lovely name that it was referenced in a good light by Apostle Paul in the Bible. (Rm 16:1-2). The name brings out the best in the bearer, indeed a beautiful name.
My name is Phoebe. So far, people use the mispronunciations to bother me. I used to hate my name. Now that I'm a bit older, I have grown into the name. I felt like I couldn't be anyone else. To those who say it is an ugly name, it is just because we Phoebes are too awesome and you're jealous.

One of the girls on Nickelodeon's 'The Thundermans' is named Phoebe. (Portrayed by Kira Kosarin).
As many other comments have stated, this name has a wonderful meaning and history. Yet despite being such a classic name, it isn't heavy at all; it has the most cheerful sound of any name I know. One can't help smiling when making the long "ee" sound, rendering "Phoebe" such a naturally happy, fun, endearing name. It is not my name but I kind of wish it was! It always makes me smile :)

Sounds too much like the word "feeble" to me. Plus, lots of people have this name. It's getting annoying.
I have the name Phoebe and I have loved it always. It might be a tad annoying that not everyone can spell it immediately, but that's the beauty of it, it is not a common name that everyone knows how to spell or pronounce. It is unique and different. I always feel lucky that I'm not the same as everyone else. There were at least 6 Lucy's in my year at school and I was the only Phoebe in the school! I will always be happy that it is my name and I truly love it. I embrace my inner Phoebe!

Phoebe is the name of the Ghost-type Elite Four member in Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire (as well as their remakes).
I love my name Phoebe, it is so amazing. I like the way it sounds really! Most of my friends forget how to spell my name so they spell it Pheobe. One time someone spelt my name Febi! But I don't really mind.
I know someone who was named Phoebe. She was very annoyed at how people spelled her name wrong (febee) or pronounced it wrong (fo-ee-bee) all the time. But as she grew older, she began to see the uniqueness of the name. She wants to find other names that could fit any ages like her name can.

I can't help but think of a stuffy old lady. Phoebe Wallingford from "All my children" or the quirky air head from "Friends" But it was also a hottie from the 80's, Phoebe Cates.

My name is Phoebe and I think it's more original than other names, I don't know many people called Phoebe, and, I think it's an awesome name and it has an awesome meaning to go with it.
My name is Phoebe. It's a unique name. Lots of people hate it for the way it's spelled or how it sounds. To those people Grow Up and don't be rude! I love it, it's meaning explains me. It's gonna be around for a while so get used to it. Also it comes with tons of nicknames I have about 13! It truly is a lovely name.
This is kind of a cool name. I guess the more you say it the more ridiculous it sounds, but if you don't say it a bunch of times in a row it's fine. As long as its popularity doesn't suddenly skyrocket, it's a pretty classic name.

In J.D. Salinger's famous novel "The Catcher In the Rye," the protagonist Holden Caulfield's sister is called Phoebe.
My name is Phoebe and I have never had any problems with it. In fact every time I tell someone my name they always tell me how beautiful and lovely it is :) which makes me feel good. Sometimes people spell it Pheobe but I just correct them and they say oh yes sorry that is the correct way to spell it and then they spell it right after that, so it's not a big deal. My family, friends and my boyfriend sometimes call me Pheebs which I like also. I do really love my name and if you name your kid it, she will love it also :) x.
One of my favorite names of all time, I first heard it on the bold and the beautiful And when I heard it I was immedeatly enchanted by the name. And the girl Phoebe was such a wonderful character, Ill hope I have daughter so I can give her this name.
When I first came onto this site, I HATED the name Phoebe, but when you read the comments, and how it is:Greek, A moon, Another moon, A Godess, Another Godess, Latin, And a beautiful spelling, so unique, and a beautiful way of saying it. I now LOVE it. Phoebe is the right way to spell it. Pheobe is completely wrong, that says feeobee. How silly! Phoebe is a beautiful name, be proud of it.[there are many more things that Phoebe is involved with]

I love the name Phoebe! It's quirky, elegant, and beautiful! I have it on my list as Phoebe Olivia. It's one of those names that more than likely won't go out of style.
I like the name though I don't know if it would be one of my top choices. I was really surprised at how much positive feedback this name has. I didn't think that it was a well liked name. I'm glad it is. I think this name deserves a comeback.
This name is cute and sweet, but it sounds kind of nasal or as if it could get annoying after saying it repeatedly. I don't understand any hate over the spelling--I like the uniqueness and blatantly obvious Greek-ness. (I really love many Greek spellings that may seem unusual, like Persephone, Daphne, etc.)
I terribly dislike this name. Although I liked Phoebe from the show 'Friends', the annoying Alyssa Milano played a Phoebe in 'Charmed', a show I despise and an actress that is better known for her body than acting ability.
I love this name. It means "shining bright" and sounds spunky, playful and clever. I've never met a Phoebe, so I think it's pretty unique in my area, but there are Phoebes all over the literary and entertainment worlds (the Bible, Catcher in the Rye, Magic School Bus, Foxtrot, Friends, Charmed, Hey Arnold, etc) and several celebrities named Phoebe (Phoebe Cates and Phoebe Snow come to mind). Phoebe is also the name of a moon, a ring of Saturn and a very cute little species of bird, so with all these namesakes, no one should consider it "weird," just interesting. And no, it's not my name!

I really dislike this name. It sounds too nerdy and unusual, and not in a good name. And I hate how its pronounced. "FEE-bee?" Not very pretty.
I love this name! It is so pretty & unique! I'm only in middle school, but when I'm married & have kids this would be such a pretty name for a little girl! I like it better spelled Phoebe:) It would be hard for people to pronounce, but I like it anyway:)

I like this name. It has a lot of charm and definitely not overused.
Hitchcock's Dictionary of Bible Names gives the meaning of the name Phoebe as Shining Bright. The Hebrew for shining bright is as follows בהיר נוצץPhebe or Phoebe is the feminine form of Phoebus, another name for Apollo. Phoebus and his winged chariot were a metaphor for the sun - or Helios.
I've always thought this was a beautiful name and I could see myself naming a future daughter Phoebe. It's great because it's not too common, but it's not so unusual that she'd be likely to get teased for it.
Like a few other commenters this is also my name. I have to say, whilst I do like it (I especially love the fact that it come from Greek mythology and the associated stories) it took me awhile to grow into it. It's quite old fashioned, despite its surging popularity. I think too that it also carries a certain amount of eccentricity. I don't know how many books I have read that have Phoebe characters in them who are either mad, street walkers or the spinster aunts! Nevertheless, it definitely a name with lots of character.
Phoebe is a very, very beautiful name, I loved it since I can remember, that's why my 8 month old daughter's name is Phoebe and everyone loves it. I think it's pretty and unique. X
If someone can't pronounce a simple name like Phoebe, then it says more about their ignorance than it does about your name. I personally think this is a really great name. It can be cute on a little girl and still sound good to have an an adult.
Phoebe is the name of a character from 'The Memory Keeper's Daughter'. I must admit, this book is the reason I fell in love with the name Phoebe. It's soft and delicate but can also be strong and spirited. Phoebe is one of those names that don't just suit one type of person.
Phoebe Bamford, played by Dervla Kirwan, was the lead female character in the popular British 1990s sitcom Goodnight Sweetheart. Phoebe is a 1940's barmaid who becomes the girlfriend and eventually the wife of time traveler, Gary Sparrow.
I like this name. It sounds spacey. But then again it is. It reminds me of space since Mars has a moon called Phobos. And, well, I used to pronounce Phoebe as "Phoby." And I liked it that way. But I like the right anunciation too.
If I have a daughter I'm going to name her Phoenix and let Phoebe be her nickname. For a few reasons: 1. Both names are related to mythology (Greek, Roman, etc.) 2. Both start with "Phoe"
Phoebe in Friends is given the nickname "Phoebes" or however it would be spelled (fEEbs). I like it! It is very original and uncommon. Sounds kind of whimsical, like a free spirit would have this name.
Such a beautiful name, it sounds happy and cheerful.

I like it spelled Phoebe. I used to hate it, but now I think it's quite unique.
I think that the spelling of 'Phoebe' is what makes it so individual. It used to be my favourite girls' name but I wouldn't name my daughter it because although cute on a young child, I don't think it ages well.

Hi, my name is Phoebe and I am the only Phoebe I know. :) I never used to like it because people always pronounce it wrong and spell it wrong but now I think it's a beautiful name and I would never change it because it really reflects my personality.
One of my closest friends has been named this name. Her mother spelt it Phoebie. I think it looks really pretty that way, more modern in a way. Ever since I met Phoebie I've loved everything about her, but I've always loved the name Phoebie. If I were to have a little girl I'd surely name her Phoebie.
As another Phebe (spelled without the "o" - my mother said she had dumb relatives who'd pronounce it Phoby) I have to say I've grown to like my name. It has MANY literary references (those above, plus Louisa May Alcott's "Eight Cousins" has a Phebe, as well as Nathaniel Hawthorne's "House of Seven Gables" - I also own the books "The Book of Phoebe" and "Phoebe's Knee", and an original Gibson print named "Phoebe"), has the Greek mythological origins, Shakespeare, and a saint. Wonderful name! And, when I broke my leg in 5th grade, my friends all called me Pheebles.
Phoebe is the most beautiful name in the world. I think that it is the perfect name for me to call my daughter because my mother's birthday is the same date as the name day for Phoebe.
Phoebe is my name and it is the most beautiful name in the world.

Phoebe was also the name of Holden Caulfield's little sister [from the book "Catcher in the Rye" by J.D. Salinger]. A very nice name. Original but not awkward, once you learn to spell it you can't get enough of it. =)
My name is Phoebe also. I have met maybe 1 other with this name in 34 years and we spelled it diffrent. I am Phoebe. Now as a young kid I didn't like how people tried to pronounce it, but I am an adult and would never chnage my name. I love it because it is unique. :) As far as I have read about others with this name, it has been all GOOD! Good women. BighHug to all the Phoebes.
My name is Phoebe, and I would just like to give my two cents about parents naming their daughters Phoebe. When I was younger, I was the ONLY Phoebe. It seemed like an odd name and people mispronounced it (FEE-OH-BEE! Wrong!). I HATED my name. As I've grown up and matured, I adore it! I like being an individual. It's an unusual name, but pretty at the same time. I love my name and would much rather be Phoebe than Samantha, Ashley or Jessica any day!
This name is fantastic, it's my favourite girl's name. I think your name should give an overall picture of who you are. Phoebe is such a friendly, bright, and happy name that anyone named Phoebe should feel truly blessed!
This is my many times Great Grandmother's name. I think it's pretty and the way it's spelled is very unique. This name has been used quite a few times on my father's side of the family. :)
