Meaning & History
In Sumerian mythology, she was a primeval goddess, corresponding to Tiamat in Babylonian mythology. She gave birth to An and Ki and the first gods, and with An she bore Enki. She was believed to be the one who came up with the idea to create mankind. She is an almost forgotten goddess, likely most popular in prehistoric times, though her name continued in the names of people, such as Ur-Nammu, the founder of the 3rd Dynasty of Ur.
