Meaning & History
Means "raspberry star woman" in Mohegan-Pequot, an extinct Eastern Algonquian language; derived from the Mohegan-Pequot cognate words of Ojibwe miskomin meaning "raspberry" and anang "star", combined with Mohegan-Pequot sqá "woman". This is borne by the winner of the Miss Native American USA 2017-2018 pageant: Autumn Rose Miskweminanocauq Williams from the Shinnecock Reservation in Southampton, New York, United States. In news articles from 2017 her second middle name was spelled Miskweminanocsqua; perhaps she has changed the ending of the name for the fact that squaw is now considered pejorative by many Native Americans.
