Meaning & History
Latinized form of Greek Μαύσωλος (Mausōlos), which is a variant spelling of Maussollos, a hellenization of a Carian masculine compound name. A famous bearer of this name was Mausolus, a Carian satrap (within the Persian Achaemenid empire) from the 4th century BC. It was his name that served as the root for the modern English word mausoleum.
