Meaning & History

The seneschal (or steward) of King Eliadus of Sicily.

He fell in love with Eliadus’s wife and murdered Eliadus during a hunt. He proposed to the queen, but she fled from him and secured herself in the castle of Monreal, which Maragoz besieged for almost 20 years.

Eventually, Eliadus’s son, Floriant, arrived in Sicily with King Arthur and an army to lift the siege. Maragoz received assistance from Emperor Filimenis of Constantinople. After several battles, the opponents agreed to decide the war in single combat between Floriant and Maragoz. After losing his nose, an ear, and a hand in the fight, Maragoz surrendered and was executed.
