Meaning & History
Derived from Gothic malvjan "to crush, to grind" combined with rîcja "powerful, strong, mighty." The second element is also closely related to Celtic rîg or rix and Gothic reiks, which all mean "king, ruler." This name might also be a short form (with reduction of the 'a') of Amalaric, but it can also be a form of Madalric and Mahalric. Malaric was the name of a 6th-century Suebi king of Galicia.
