Derived from Gothic #malvjan# "to crush, to grind" combined with #rîcja# "powerful, strong, mighty." The second element is also closely related to Celtic #rîg# or #rix# and Gothic #reiks#, which all mean "king, ruler." This name might also be a short form (with reduction of the 'a') of AMALARIC, but it can also be a form of MADALRIC and MAHALRIC. Malaric was the name of a 6th-century Suebi king of Galicia.
