Meaning & History
West Frisian form of Nicolaas via the name Nyckele. This form came to be via a process called (consonant) assimilation, where the 'n' in the name assimilated with the following 'l'. An example of where something rather similar happened is the Swedish word nyckel "key", which ultimately comes from Old Norse lykill meaning "key".This name originated in late medieval times (as is evident by the archaic -ck- spelling), but is still in use to this day - albeit rarely. The modern spelling of the name is Lykele.
