Lurchi started is life as a mascot of the German shoe selling company Salamander. He is the hero of more than 100 adventures in the series 'Luchis Abenteuer' ("Lurchi's adventures") distributed as booklets to children buying shoes. The series was reprinted in several book volumes.The name is a diminutive of the German word Lurch "newt".
