Meaning & History
Derived from Dutch loedertje, which is a diminutive of loeder, a Dutch term for a mean woman (a shrew or a harridan, if you will). In Dutch literature and popular culture, Loedertje is the name of a female stray Siamese cat from the popular long-running cartoon Jan, Jans en de kinderen (which is known in English as Jack, Jacky and the Juniors). She wound up being adopted by the family that the cartoon is centered around, namely the Tromp family. This was much to the chagrin of the father of the family (and also the other pets in the family), who as a result started referring to her as a loeder pretty much immediately. This stuck and the diminutive of the term eventually became her name, which turned out to actually be quite well-suited to her, as Loedertje is mischievous by nature and likes to set up the other pets in the family for her misdeeds.
