The origin of this Frisian name is a little uncertain: it is thought that it is a short form of Germanic names that contained the element laifa (see Bernlef) or liub (see Liubigild). Because of the close resemblance with the Dutch word for 'lion' ("leeuw"), it might also be related to that - but that is unlikely.
