Interestingly, in the musical "Fiddler on the Roof" (which takes place in a Russian shtetl), this name is pronounced like the English word "laser". This is true even in the Yiddish cast recording.
I would like this name more if it were pronounced as the English word "laser." LAY-zer. Because it's pronounced differently from that, I prefer Lazarus.

St. Lazar, also known as Knez Lazar Hrebeljanović (кнеѕ Лаѕар Хребељановић) was a famous bearer of this name. He was dubbed "Emperor" ("цар") by the people of Serbia because they thought that he was the only one who could reunite the Serbian Empire. He was killed on the Battle of Kosovo in 1389. He was also an important member of the Order of the Dragon.
