Meaning & History

From Japanese 紙 (kami) meaning "paper" or 郁 (ka) meaning "fragrance, perfume", 海 (mi) meaning "sea, ocean" combined with 子 (ko) meaning "child". Other kanji combinations are possible.

As a word, 紙衣 or 紙子 (kamiko) refers to Japanese paper clothes, which are a part of a crafting tradition that is hardly practiced in Japan today.
