Meaning & History
From the characters 渐 (jiàn, meaning “gradual”) and 离 (lí, meaning “departure”). This name was borne by Gao Jianli (高渐离), a famous musician and assassin during the late Warring States period of China (475 - 221 BCE). A native of the state of Yan (燕), he was adept at playing the Zhu (a type of stringed instrument). He is known for his famous failed attempt to assassinate Ying Zheng, future founder of the Qin dynasty, by trying to smash his Zhu on the ruler’s head, missing the mark due to his blindness.
