Meaning uncertain. Georgian sources state that the name is etymologically related to Bahram and therefore of Persian origin. Also compare the related names Gvaram and Varam.Other sources (primarily Russian) state that the name might possibly be derived from Hebrew גּוּר (gur) meaning "(lion) cub" or from Turkish gür meaning "strong, sturdy". A derivation from Mingrelian გური (guri) meaning "heart" might also be possible.
